As I have reflected on “mission work” , how we use the words “mission trip” and the description of  “the mission”, I have found no mention in the bible (at least in the translation I used) of missionary or mission work.  I did find some references to “a mission” (Acts 12:25).  It seems to be something or a task with purpose assigned by God or man.   The reason it interests me is because of what I found at North West Haiti Christian Mission.  There is no question that the core purpose or mission of this work is the sharing of the Gosple of Jesus Christ.  It is at the center of all the work with the purpose of achieving an opportunity to share the Gosple with the people of Haiti.  But there is much-much more surrounding this central objective that constitutes “a mission”.  It is an entire socio-ecomomic system that works to help the brothers and sisters in Christ of the mission, achieve a level of independence and education that will help  lift as many of the current generation and the next generation to be able to help themselves.  This is done through many different types of work based upon the needs at each community in which “a mission” and Church exists.  The demonstration of this Christian community speaks to all the people on the outside and is very powerful.  Don’t worry, there are many people cared for who  cannot care for themselves and I will talk about that in other blogs.  However, those that can care for themselves are asked to do so and work, no handouts.  Much of our contributions go to pay these people to work and serve one another by operating the daily functions of “the mission”.  The missionaries oversee the work and help the people learn how and what to do.  The system works and if effective.  It takes money and much of our contributions go to pay for their labor.  We tend to want to give things we see as needed.  We should focus on giving things the missionaries tell us they need.  Most of all we should constantly keep them in our prayers and petitions to the Lord.   There is more to a mission than most of us know.  One recommendation I will make to you all, especially those who have children at home or who you can influence;  mission trips to places like Haiti are for them.  Expose them to this view of the world and if possible go with them.  It will be one of the most important life lessons you be able to bestow into their hearts.  It will help to make their heart moldable by the Lord, their eyes open to see what God sees.  I pray and lift up all our missionaries all over the world and those at NWHCM.  Lord you know their work and needs.  Give all of us the means and desire to support their work.  You have blessed us in order that we might return to them just a small portion of the grace you have given to us all in your Son.  In Your Name I pray.  Amen

Ran 6 miles of quarter mile intervals this afternoon.  Ran one mile at a faster pace than I had before.  Time to step up the work a little.  Had a dinner but worked it in just before.  Was surprised how good I felt.  Cold is about gone and got some good rest last night.  Got a new pair of shoes and determined that I waited to long to replace the old pair.   Makes my legs feel better.  Hopefully, I will get a long bike ride tomorrow, 2 hrs is the plan.

T-shirts and Christians have in common?  Actually a lot.  As we made the trip back from Haiti yesterday, we wore the t-shirt of Northwest Haiti Christian Mission.  We were recognized and approached by people all day long asking about the work we were involved in.  Christians.  Many of them were involved in some work as well.   As we exchanged stories I was struck by how different and yet how similar our experiences were.  Most everyone was involved in helping an orphanage.  Pure religion, to help the orphans and widows.  All the people we talked to worked in or close to Port Au Prince.  I spent the trip back organizing my thoughts and getting it all into mental compartments.  On a side note, we met with the people coming in from Indianapolis.  WISH TV was there and has taken an interest in the work being done on behalf of the people.  They did a quick interview with me.  Hopefully, what I said will make some sense and bring glory to the Lord and his servants in Haiti.   I will try to give some idea of what I saw and the observations I made in my future blogs.  Pray for the missionaries who are pouring out their lives for the people of Haiti.  I will tell about them as well.  A mission is a system more complicated and purposful than you can imagine.  It is what you expect and so much deeper than you know.  Keep up and I will try to give you a view.  In Him

Did 4.15 miles tonight on the pavement.  After 4 days off, I had to expand my lungs again and it was a little painful.  Amazing how the body gets used to what you ask it to do or not to do so quick.  Got new shoes tonight.  You get about 500 miles on a pair of shoes.  I can tell when they are breaking down by how my legs feel.  It is 31 days till the run so got a pair to get them good and used by then.  Won’t be taking to many days off from here on unless trapped into it.  Won’t do less than 4 miles each workout from here on.

We went out to the far west today to La Plane, Beauchamp and La Baie.  We went maybe 60 miles all total but it took us all day.  The roads are all dirt, rock and ruts.  Travel is slow and I am sure without a horn someone would be killed.  Donkeys don’t recognize horns but people and other vehicles do.  At La Plane, we watched as a Church was staked off to build.  About 200 people will attend.  Now they are in a makeshift hut with a tarp for a roof.  They will pour a concrete slab and build the walls with concrete blocks.  The roof will be tin.  We then went to Beauchamp where the church is already built and now other buildings are going up for a sewing program teaching the women to sew so they will have a trade.  They also have a feeding program.  They are really proud of the cisterns they now have to catch water.  They have had to carry in water but now they will capture it through a gutter system.  We then went to La Baie.  There in     La  Baie they are building an orphanage to go with the Church.  The far west is  poorer than poor.  You cannot imagine when you look at what they live in as homes and consider how a hurricane or hard tropical storm would destroy them in an instant.   Like most civilizations, the river is very key to life.  Washing, bathing and all that goes with water.  Tomorrow is Easter and there is a 5:30 am sunrise service.  A regular service will start at 9:30 am and go till noon.  HE IS RISEN!  Amen.  We are headed for Port au Prince tomorrow afternoon.

No running today.  However, I am sure by the truck ride, my body will as sore as if I did weights.

We are in Haiti at St Louis du Nord, at the Mission.  The road from the airport to here was about 12k and a real challenge.  A full truck with supplies and gear and us hanging on to ourselves and the stuff.  A group is coming in to the Mission and one is leaving.  Saw the works going on here today.  A center for handicapped children, an orphanage, a birthing center and a home for the elderly.  Amazing work being done here for God’s children.  They are feeding over 10,000 meals a day.  Proverty here and needs are hard to describe and have you understand.   We must send out to as many as possible the web site so we can have many give just a little.  A little goes a long way here.  Tomorrow we are going to the far northwest.  A little is all the Lord asks of us in comparision to the riches he has supplied in His Son.

Fear there won’t be any here.  But will look for the opportunity.

We are preparing to leave for Haiti.  I can’t begin to tell you how much the calls and email from friends, believers and just general encouragement, have meant.  We probably under estimate the power of encouragement.  It is sweet and brings joy, comfort and builds endurance in people.  Let’s all keep in mind the encouragement we receive by the scriptures and the grace of God in who we hope everlasting.  Ask in prayer that our jouney will be and encouragement to the people who are giving their lives to the Haitians and to the Lord. That we may be good ambassadors for Him.  In Him, Amen

Training Prep

Was able to get up early and do a quick hour on the elliptical.  I will get a break day tomorrow.    Eating better and training rather than just doing it for health has really let me dropped the weight.  Last night was down to 174 lbs.   Don’t think I have been that low in 10 years.  Not sure if I will get a training run while we are in Haiti, but hope so.  Taking my stuff.
